Rediscovering an Old Artwork from 2000

Scroll through your digital archives or social media memories, and every so often, something jumps out that stops you in your tracks. Today, a Facebook memory brought me face-to-face with a piece of my own history: a painting created back in the year 2000.

Seeing this artwork after more than two decades triggers a wave of nostalgia and artist reflection. It is fascinating to look back at the roots of my creative journey and recognize the raw energy, raw emotion, and artistic choices that shaped my work a quarter of a century ago.

The Concept, Technique, and Visual Language

This monochrome painting captures an intense, expressive moment through a blend of figurative art, text, and street-art/Art Brut influences:

  • Monochrome Contrast: Using a stark palette of blacks, whites, and greys allowed me to focus heavily on line, form, and emotional contrast without the distraction of vibrant colors.
  • Text as Texture and Content: Words play a dual role here. They serve as visual texture while carrying direct narrative weight. Phrases integrated into the borders—such as "Er is verschil tussen luisteren en horen wat iemand zegt..." ("There is a difference between listening and hearing what someone says...")—invite the viewer to pause and decode the message.
  • Raw Emotion: Words like BIZARRE, PAIN, DANGER, and SICK emerge from the background layers, accentuating the central bound figure and exploring themes of restraint, communication, and human vulnerability.

Although this original piece found a new home and was sold many years ago, encountering its photograph today reminds me of how consistent certain themes and techniques remain throughout an artist's evolution.
